Tragic Michael K. Williams may have died of a fentanyl overdose inside his Brooklyn penthouse on Monday, reports have suggested.
The actor was found dead at the age of 54-years-old on Monday – with a nephew reportedly discovering his body at the actor’s home and ‘surrounded by drugs paraphernalia’.
As details emerge of The Wire actor’s death, new police reports have suggested that authorities are hunting a drug dealer that they believe may have supplied Michael with narcotics.
While there have been reports and speculation about the cause of the actor’s death, a post-mortem is yet to be conducted to confirm his cause and manner of death.
NBC New York on Tuesday claimed: “Two senior NYPD officials told News 4 that drug paraphernalia was discovered in the apartment and that Williams may have overdosed on fentanyl.”
Fentanyl is a powerful opioid which is used as a pain medication and is known to be highly addictive due to potency.
While the drug is similar to morphine, it is reported as being as high as 50 to 100 times stronger, and can cause death if mixed with other substances or if too high a dose is administered.
Meanwhile, TMZ has reported that police are hunting a drug dealer in connection with Michael’s death.
Their report states: “NYPD detectives are conducting an investigation into the origin of the narcotics cops found at the site of the actor’s death over the weekend” – and adds that the drugs in question are “heroin-based”.
The report said that the actor’s death had “triggered a criminal investigation” and that: “cops are trying to locate the drug dealer.”
The acting world was shocked by the news of Michael’s death.
The actor had been due to attend the Emmy Awards this week after being nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Montrose Freeman in the HBO series Lovecraft Country.
He also famously played Chalky White in the series Broadwalk Empire and Omar Little in The Wire – both also made by HBO.
Michael’s longtime representative Marianna Shafran confirmed the actor’s tragic death this week.
She told the Hollywood Reporter: “It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams.
“They ask for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss.”
While HBO issued a statement about his death: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Michael Kenneth Williams, a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years.
“While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss.”
Michael is survived by a son named Elijah Anderson, while the actor’s devastated nephew, Booker T. Williams, told the New York Post on Tuesday: “My uncle was loving. My family loved him. He loved our family.
“He loved our community, and he did everything in his power to show love.”
