Olympic hero, reality TV personality and transgender rights activist Caitlyn Jenner announced on Friday that she has filed paperwork to enter the race to become California’s next governor. The former Olympic athlete and reality TV star will run as a Republican in the Democratic stronghold state, she is being supported by Brad Parscale, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager.

Jenner, a US sports icon and gold medal winner in 1976, gained reality television fame after appearing in Keeping Up with the Kardashians, a series that began in 2007.

The 71-year-old longtime Republican has been consulting with GOP advisers as she considers joining the field of candidates hoping to replace Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in a likely recall election later this year. Jenner issued a statement early Friday, making her plans official by saying, “I’m in.”

“California has been my home for nearly 50 years. I came here because I knew that anyone, regardless of their background or station in life, could turn their dreams into reality,” Jenner said in a statement announcing her candidacy. “But for the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision.”

In a statement, the transgender rights activist slammed Newsom for his “over-restrictive lockdown” during the COVID-19 pandemic and complained that the Golden State’s taxes are “too high.”

Jenner’s website went live Friday morning, featuring a slew of campaign goodies for sale, including a pair of stemless “Caitlyn for California” wine glasses for $35 and matching “beverage coolers” for $15.

On Friday, Newsom political adviser Dan Newman issued a statement saying, “We always knew the Republican recall would be a ludicrous circus full of Trump supporters, which only reinforces how much Californians appreciate Governor Newsom’s competent, compassionate, experienced leadership during an unprecedented series of crises.”

Newsom’s campaign quickly circulated a fundraising email, saying Jenner “is working closely with Donald Trump’s former presidential campaign manager.”

The Los Angeles County Democratic Party also responded to the announcement, writing on Twitter, “You know what — California is worth fighting for, that’s why we’re going to do everything we can to stop this Republican Recall.”
