From the moment he was born, Prince William has been in the public eye.
Every key milestone in his life from his first appearance in Princess Diana‘s arms on the steps of the hospital where he was born to walking grief-stricken behind his mother’s coffin and marrying wife Kate has been in the spotlight.
But there was a time when he enjoyed a brief break from all eyes being on him – and that was during his university days.
The press agreed that William should be allowed to go about his studies at St Andrews in Scotland without constant media attention.
But even then, there was obviously still a lot of interest surrounding the young prince, who was keen to go under the radar.
So he decided to go by a different name and he picked an extremely normal moniker – Steve.
Although he did officially enrol at the university in the name William Wales, it is believed his classmates used the nickname so he didn’t receive any unwanted attention.
There’s also a good chance his now wife Kate Middleton called him this, as they were close friends at university and lived in the same student accommodation.

When he first started at St Andrews, William studied history of art but then switched to geography. He graduated in June 2005 in the same ceremony as Kate.
It was attended by the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Now 16 years on, William and Kate have been happily married for 10 years and are the parents to three sweet children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Earlier this year, the couple returned to the Fife town where they meet during a week of engagements in Scotland.
There, the pair raced each other on land yachts as they joined six teenage carers trying out the sport on a day course organised as respite for them from their normal duties looking after family members.
They were also spotted enjoying a quiet romantic meal at Forgan’s a contemporary restaurant with a Scottish twist.
The couple asked for a private seating area at the back of the eatery that has welcomed famous golfing celebrities like Rory McIlroy.
