Golden Globes 2022: Jamie Lee Curtis ‘proud’ as only celebrity who showed up at the awards amid diversity boycott

Jamie Lee Curtis made a bold statement at the Golden Globes 2022, as she was the only celebrity to show up.

The 79th Golden Globes took place behind closed doors on Sunday with no red carpet or televised ceremony following the criticism last year over the lack of Black members at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

It was previously reported that no famous stars would be attending or involved with the awards due to the Hollywood-wide boycott, but there was one who quite literally showed their face.

Halloween actress Curtis appeared in a pre-recorded video to celebrate theHFPA’s philanthropic efforts.

The 63-year-old said she was ‘proud’ to be associated with the association in its venture as a non-profit trade association and 501(C)(3) Charitable organisation.

In a video shared by the awards online, Curtis – who has won two Golden Globes in the past – said: ‘They fund creators and educators… do so at a very low key, off the record, evening of giving.

‘I’ve been the lucky host of that evening a couple of times.’

She continued: ‘And so I just wanted to honour and stand with them in this continued advocacy of great need and great support that the HFPA continues to serve and offer with their generosity.

‘I am proud to be associated with them in this venture.’

It was a bold move given that many celebrities have publicly condemned the HFPA since it was revealed that not a single one of its 87 members were Black.

The association said last year that they were committed to adding at least 13 Black members by this year, and shared its ‘reform plan timeline’ that was due to be implemented ‘regardless of the next air date of the Golden Globes’.

Among the stars to speak out against the HFPA included actress Scarlett Johansson, Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes, director Ava DuVernay, Viola Davis, Jennifer Aniston and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Tom Cruise was said to have returned his three Golden Globe trophies in protest.
