Cultism which had it roots in tertiary institutions is now finding its way into secondary school. In the last decade, one would have looked at young boys and girls with innocence and would have argued that those illegal groups is absent in their school.
Then, students are taught the subject of cultism in civil education to avoid such groups in preparation for their study in polytechnics and universities.
Cultist groups that swear allegiance of secrecy, initiate new members and carry out harmful activities have crawled to our secondary schools and might become a normalcy if we do not take necessary precautive actions.
A netizen took to his Twitter page to share a sad news that his young cousin was beaten to death for refusing to join a cultism by his fellow schoolmates.
The 12 years old boy attend Dowen college in Lekki, Lagos State. It was alleged that the school management called his parents that the young boy was injured while playing football with his friends.
His parents quickly rushed to school to pick their son and took him to the hospital to receive adequate treatment.
But the healthworker after proper examination revealed that the boy has internal injuries as a result of brutal beating from bullies.
The young boy opened up that he was being beaten to a pulp by cult members because he refused to join them. He mentioned five names of students who tried to lure him into cultism and participated in beating him.
Sadly, the boy due to died as a result of the injuries.
Many social media users has commiserated with the relative over the lost of his cousin while expressing shock at the rate of cultism in secondary school.
A social media user commented, ” I served at Dowen College and the problem is parents dont want their children to be scolded by teachers, teachers don’ t want to lose their jobs and schools don’ t want to lose money. Business for school, job for teachers and for parent- spoilt brat”
Another said: If that boy didn’ t say what happened before dying. God rests his poor soul, the school management would have covered it up with those lies. That school should be shut down for now and sued for all they are worth. And those little cultist better be on their way to juvenile” .
