Charlene White was flooded with support from Loose Women viewers after she sobbed recounting her aunt’s funeral during lockdown, a day after Boris Johnson was grilled over an alleged BYOB bash in May 2020.
The Prime Minister offered up an apology on Wednesday over claims a party held in the garden of Number 10 while the rest of the country was only allowed to meet one other person outside.
Emails acquired by ITV claimed a ‘Bring Your Own Booze’ party was held in the garden of Downing Street on May 20, 2020, with 100 staff members invited.
They were told to ‘make the most of the weather’ whilst the UK was in the midst of a lockdown during the first wave of the Covid pandemic.
On Thursday’s Loose Women, the panel of Charlene, Carol McGiffin, Nadia Sawalha and Linda Robson fumed over the latest Downing Street scandal.
But the anchor struck a chord, in particular, as she told viewers: ‘So many people sent in emails about loved ones. My family stuck by the rules, we had to bury family members without being able to hug each other.
‘I had to sit in a crematorium while by myself while my aunt was buried…’ the anchor told the panel, as she started to become tearful.
She explained how she was sitting with just her baby daughter on her lap, as restrictions at the time meant she was not able to sit with her family as they weren’t members of the same household.
‘We were all in floods of tears and we couldn’t hug each other.
’I stood by the graveside as gravediggers were filling her grave, and watching my cousin in floods of tears and not able to hug her as we were following the rules.’
As Linda handed her a tissue, Charlene reminded viewers: ‘We were told we had to follow the rules, so we were following the rules.
She noted how this came ‘with the understanding those in charge were also doing the same thing’.
‘Should I have just hugged my cousin?’ she concluded.
The panel quickly comforted her, with many of those watching also offering up their love and support to the much-loved host after her emotional comments.
One wrote on Twitter: ‘Boris made Charlene White cry…girls are we ready to fight?!? #LooseWomen.’
‘Really feel like Charlene is echoing the mood of many across the country right now #LooseWomen,’ said a sympathetic fan.
Another shared: ‘At first, I thought Charlene was gonna defend Boris but I am glad she didn’t. We’ve been through too much #LooseWomen.’
‘Charlene she is one of the best journalists on TV and I love her on Loose Women. She’s brilliant, sending her love #LooseWomen,’ someone else added.
Reflecting on her comments, Charlene said to viewers: ‘I know I’ve been upset, I’m really sorry if we’ve upset anyone out there today,’ before urging them to use helplines if they needed.
Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
