Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly were ‘surprised’ to film a second series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here in Wales last year, confirming they’re keen to head back down under next time – and we don’t blame them.

The pair have been at the helm of the hit ITV series since 2001, with hundreds of celebrities having tested themselves to the limits in the famous Australia outback.

However, when Covid hit, it threw the upcoming series in 2020 into doubt as they looked to find a UK-based location amid travel restrictions.

In 2020, the campmates found themselves switching from the winter sun of Australia to the cool winds of Wales, with Ant and Dec returning to the location of Gwrych Castle for 2021.

But speaking on The Graham Norton Show, the Geordie duo told the host they hadn’t expected to be back in Wales for a second year – and it’s unlikely they’ll return there again.

Asked if they were saddened to be filming I’m a Celebrity in Wales again in 2021, Dec shared: ‘We weren’t saddened but we were surprised. With Covid there was no getting around it.’

Ant said: ‘If it has to be Wales for another series, we will do it in Wales, but we want to go back to Australia.’

Dec went on to call Australia the show’s ‘spiritual home’ adding: ‘It’s been for 20 years, and four weeks there in the sun in October and November is great!

‘We love it and we want to go back,’ he teased.

The presenters have been open about their preference to film the show in Australia, and with travel restrictions gradually easing, there’s hope they might get their wish for 2022.

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly earlier this month, Ant said they ‘hope’ to return to the outback, but acknowledged that they ‘said that last year’.

Ant said: ‘We’d all like to go back. It’s proper home… we never get called off-air with a storm in Australia!’

Elsewhere, Ant and Dec are back on-screen for their new game show, Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win, which sees players given the opportunity to win the world’s first limited jackpot.

Limitless Win features no ‘grand prize’ aspect, with contestants able to travel up an endless money ladder, leading them to previously joke about their fear of ‘bankrupting ITV.’

Speaking last month to Metro.co.uk and other press, Dec said: ‘Just as long as you stay in the game you could keep going and keep playing and you know that did give us sleepless nights sometimes…’

Ant laughed: ‘We did worry that we were going to bankrupt ITV.’

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight from 10.35pm on BBC One.
